पाण्यावरच्या रेघा
कोणते तंत्रज्ञान किती व केव्हा प्रगती करेल ह्याचा अंदाज लागणे महा कठीण. सार्वत्रिक सामान्यज्ञानाने जावे तर केव्हा दगाफटका होईल त्याचा नेम नाही. पुस्तक व प्रकाशन क्षेत्रात सारखे घडत असते.
इथली एक प्रसिद्ध पुस्तक विक्रेती कंपनी बार्नेस अ‍ॅंड नोबल इतकी मोठी व ती म्हणे आता विकायला काढली आहे. कारण काय तर लोकांची पुस्तके वाचण्याची सवय बदलली आहे. आता लोक खरोखरची (साक्षात )पुस्तके वाचण्या पेक्षा ई-पुस्तके ज्यास्त वाचताहेत व त्यामुळे नेहमीच्या कागदी पुस्तकांचा खप कमी झालाय, ई-पुस्तकांचा खप वाढलाय. आणि हा सगळ्याच पारंपारिक प्रकाशकांना येणारा अनुभव आहे म्हणतात.
ह्यामुळे की काय अमेरिकेत सध्या ई-रीडर्सची चलती आहे. अमेझॉन कंपनीचे किंडल, सोनी कंपनीचे रीडर, नूक , व आता ह्या सगळ्यांवर बाजी मारणारे आय-पॅड. ह्या रीडर्स वर ई-बुक्स संगणकाद्वारे लादावी लागतात व मग ती आपण कुठेही, वाचू शकतो. नेहमीचे पुस्तक समजा २० डॉलरला असेल तर ई-बुक अदमासे ५/६ डॉलरला पडते. शिवाय आयपॅडवर तर टेक्स्ट बुके प्रकरणाने सुद्धा कमी भावात उतरवू शकतात. कित्येक ई-पुस्तके इंटरनेटवर मोफतही उपलब्ध आहेत. ही संगणकावरही उतरवून वाचता येतात. जसे गुटेनबर्ग ह्या संकेतस्थळावर खूप जुनी जुनी पुस्तके मोफत ठेवलेली आहेत.
जगात पुस्तकांची घोडदौड ह्या ई-पुस्तकांच्या दिशेने चालली असताना, झेरॉक्स कंपनीने असे एक मशीन विकसित केले आहे की ज्याचा छापायचा वेग, ताशी शंभर पाने आहे. व हे मशीन पाने जोडून पुस्तकाची बांधणीही करते. अशी ४/५ हजार मशीने विकण्यात आली असून एका पुस्तक विक्रेत्याकडे लोक रांगा लावून आपले पुस्तक प्रत्यक्ष छापताना बघतात व दोन तीन मिनिटात पुस्तक छापून हातात तयार मिळतेही. आता हे डिजिटल प्रिंटिंगचे पुस्तक छापणे यश मिळवील की ई-पुस्तक हा संभ्रमात टाकणारा प्रश्न आहे. खुद्द गुगल कंपनी अशी डिजिटल पुस्तके ७/८ डॉलरमध्ये छापून देते. शिवाय तुम्ही अगदी कमीत कमी प्रती ( अगदी एक सुद्धा ) छापू शकता.
ह्या संभ्रमात नक्की भरवसा फक्त संत वांङमयात मिळतो. ज्ञानेश्वरांच्या अमृतानुभवात एके ठिकाणी म्हटले आहे की हे पाण्यावर रेघा काढून माशाचे चित्र काढल्यासारखे आहे. आपण म्हणतो वांङमयाला अक्षर-वांङमय पण ते टिकते किती हे आपण ५० वर्षात विस्मरणात गेलेल्या लेखकांवरून पाहतोच. ( कदाचित म्हणूनच कायद्याने ६० वर्षांनंतर कोणीही कोणाचे पुस्तक विना परवाना छापू शकतो, कॉपीराइट फक्त ६० वर्षांसाठी ). असे असताना ई-पुस्तके काय किंवा कागदावरची पुस्तके काय, सर्व पाण्यावरच्या रेघाच !

Lines on Water
Nowadays it is difficult to imagine which technology will outdo which . If we go by the common peoples' trends , we do not which one will change when and how soon. In the business of Books printing and publishing, this is typically so.
E-books and E-readers are a craze in America, these days. It has already upset the conventional book publishers like Barnes & Nobel and they are said to be on the death row. They say that more people are reading e-books than the conventional hard copy books. And they say, e-books are cheaper ( costing on average 5/6 $ a book ) compared with $20 for the conventional ones. After Amezon's kindle, sony's e-reader, nook, etc now Apple has come out with the winner i-pad which is so sophisticated that it is bound to be a best seller. In addition there are many a websites which give e-books free of charge. The Gutenberg site has lot of old authors' e-books which can be downloaded free. The downloaded e-books on the e-readers can be read more conveniently anywhere at our leisure.
When the trend and business is thus going towards e-books and e-readers there is one company Xerox , which has developed a digital printing machine which may reverse the trend. This machine is capable of printing 100 pages in a minute and the cost of printing is hardly 1 penny a page. Morevoer the machine also does book-binding and colour cover page. The company has already sold 4/5000 machines and at one book sellers' shop people waite in line to see their book getting printed in minutes. Even a company like google has partnered with this company and can give a hard book copy at 7/8 $ a book from a digital copy.
In such a contrasting scenario, we do not know if e-books will outlive the hard copy books or otherwise.
The copy-right law keeps the rights for 60 yrs, perhaps becuse anyway people put all literature in the abyss of forgetfullness in 50/60 yrs. All our literature as the saints say are the lines on water and may not last long enough, either in hard copy or in e-book shape !

अरुणोदय झाला---११
चित्रांतली नग्नता
कौंटी म्युझियम ऑफ आर्ट्स, लॉस एंजेल्स, मध्ये थॉमस ईकीन्स ( १८४४-१९१६) ह्या प्रसिद्ध जुन्या चित्रकाराचे प्रदर्शन लागलेले आहे. ह्या चित्रकाराच्या पेंटिग्जमध्ये प्रामुख्याने नग्न पुरुषाच्या आकृतींचे वैभव चितारलेले आहे. (वर ह्यांचे "स्विमिंग" नावाचे चित्र नमून्यादाखल दिले आहे). चित्रकलेमध्ये परंपरेने नग्नता का दाखवतात हे न सुटणारे कोडे आहे. आपण नग्नतेबद्दल विचार करतो न करतो तोच न्यू यॉर्क मध्ये एक विचित्र प्रदर्शन भरले आहे. ह्यात खरोखरची जिवंत माणसे, नग्न ठेवली आहेत व विचारले आहे की, चित्रकलेत नग्नता असते तर मग ही नग्न माणसे म्हणजे "आर्ट" ( कला ) समजावे का ?
बरे, ही काही फॅशनप्रमाणे हलकी फुलकी बाब नसते. आता ह्याच ईकीन्सला अश्लीलतेखाली दहा वर्षे बिनकामाची घालवावी लागली. कारण तो चित्रकलेचा प्रोफेसर असताना, व वर्गात मुली असताना त्याने एक नग्न पुरुष मॉडेल म्हणून आणला होता, जे त्याकाळी न पटणारे होते. आपल्या हुसेनना नाही का केवळ सरस्वतीचे व भारतमातेचे नग्न चित्र काढल्याबद्दल परदेशी दारोदार भटकावे लागते आहे व ते ही वयाच्या ९४ व्या वर्षी ! तर चित्रकार हे काही गंमत म्हणून नग्नता चितारीत नाहीत.
नग्न आकृती, व्यवहारात, एरव्ही कपड्यांनी झाकलेल्या असतात, व नाही म्हटले तरी कामुक भावना उद्दीपित करणार्‍या असतात. त्यामुळे पटकन चित्त आकर्षून घेतात. इथेच चित्रकाराची अर्धी बाजी जिंकल्या जाते. गंमत बघा, नग्न पेंटिंग्ज म्युझियम मध्ये दाखविल्या जातात खरी ,पण पाहणार्‍याने कपडे घालूनच ती पहावी लागतात. काही चित्रकारांच्या मते नग्न आकारात एक नैसर्गिक देखणेपण असते व तेच सौंदर्य त्यांना चित्रातून दाखवायचे असते.
व्यवहारात काही काही गोष्टी खूफ सांगून जातात. अमेरिकेत वाट्टेल तसे कपडे घालणारी मुले, भारतीय आजीला मात्र म्हणतात, की आजी साडी घालू नको, उघडे पोट विचित्र दिसते. कदाचित नग्नतेकडे पाहण्याची आपली मानसिकताच ह्यातून दिसत असावी !

Nudity in Art
One of the famous yesteryear's artists, Thomas Eakins ( 1844-1916) is holding an exhibition of his paintings at Los Angels County Museum of Art. ( One painting of his by name "Swimming" is givne above as an example ). This artist celebrates the nudity of the man and paints mostly men as athletes in various postures. While we wonder the propriety of his selecting "nudity" as his subject we come to know that presently there is an exhibition at New York where live nude men & women are kept as "art".
That exhibition asks us that if there is nudity in art, can we say nude themselves are "art" ?
This tendency of depicting nudity in paintings is not something which our artists take as lightly as a fashion. They are quite serious about the effort and stake their entir careers for the cause. We are told that this Thomas Eakins had to forego his paintings work for ten years when he was a professor of fine arts and had brought a nude male model in the class. And he had women students present there. Even the famous Indian artist Husein has to suffer a lot by being exile from country to country because he painted Hindu Godess Saraswati in the nude. So, artist take nudity very seriously, after all , even at the ripe age of 94 !
We will have to concede that ( since normally we are sufficiently clad in clothes ) the nude figures do raise our emotions and catch the eye easily. For an artist, perhaps half the battle is won here. It is so ironical that though we condone nudity in the paintings at exhibitions, we have to see them while we are properly dressed ! Some artist do believe that there is an innate beauty in the nude natural form of men and women and they want to draw the same for us !
We always want something different and not everyday stuff. Perhaps this tendency in looking at things is exhibited by our grandchildren, when they say to their sari-clad grandmother that she should shun sari as it shows off part of the stomach. To them, it is unusual and so not ordinary . This must be the same view we must be taking when we look at nudity in paintings !

जाळून टाका !
फाईन आर्ट्सचे एक प्राध्यापक व इथले एक नावाजलेले चित्रकार श्री.जॉन बाल्डेसरी ह्यांच्या "प्युअर ब्यूटी" नावाच्या चित्रप्रदर्शनावरून एक जुनी आठवण आली. चंद्रकांत पाटील, त्यावेळी वहिदा रेहमान ह्या नटीवर फिदा असत. त्यांनी एका असीम प्रेमक्षणी त्यावेळेसच्या त्यांच्या कविता, वहिदाला अर्पण म्हणून, जाळून टाकल्या होत्या ! तसेच ह्या जॉन ( वय वर्षे ८० ) महाशयांनी त्यांची ६०-७० दशकातली चित्रे जाळून त्यांची राख एका कलशात ठेवून त्याची चित्रे काढलीत व प्रदर्शनाचे नाव ठेवलेय "प्युअर ब्यूटी" किंवा "शुद्ध सौंदर्य" !
कदाचित असला वेडेपणा नाही दाखवला तर कलावंताला कोणी थोर म्हणत नसावेत. हुसेन ह्यांनी मागे असेच जहांगीर आर्ट गॅलरीत फक्त अस्ताव्यस्त पेपरांचा ढिगारा घातला होता, व हेच माझे प्रदर्शन म्हणाले. असेच हे चित्रकार एका फलकाचे प्रदर्शन करतात. फलक असा : ज्या पेंटिंग्ज मध्ये सौम्य रंग असतील तेच भडक रंगांपेक्षा ज्यास्त विकल्या जातील. ज्या पेंटिंग्जमध्ये गाई, कोंबड्या असतील ती ज्यास्त धूळ खातील, बैल व कोंबडे असलेल्या पेंटिंग्ज पेक्षा !
एका प्रसिद्ध चित्रकाराने आपल्याच चित्रांची अशी खिल्ली उडवावी व काय खरे सौंदर्य असा चकित करणारा प्रश्न टाकावा हे स्तंभित करणारे आहे.
जीवन ही एका मूर्खाने सांगितलेली कहाणी आहे, जिचा काही अर्थ नाही, असे जे म्हणतात तेच शेवटी खरे ठरत असावे !

Burn it !
The exhibition titled "Pure Beauty" by a famous Fine Arts Professor and Painter, Mr. John Baldessari, reminded me of Chandrakant Patil. Chandrakant Patil, was in love with the famous actress, Vaheeda Rehman and in one fit of madness had burnt all his poems as an offering to the deity ! Similarly this painter here has not only burnt his onetime famous paintings but put the ash of such burnt paintings in an urn and is exhibiting the painting of that urn as "Pure Beauty" !
Perhaps by convention the artist must not be gettting due recognition unless he exhibits any such madness. Mr. Husain at one time had similarly exhibited a mess of scattered newspapers at Jehangir Art Gallery and had called it an exhibition. In the vein of same madness, this Baldessari painter, has painted one painting, which is just a written board, giving tips to the artists. The Board reads as : Generally speaking paintings with light colours sell more quickly than paintings with dark colours. Subject matter is important, it has beeb said that paintings with cows and hens in them collect dust while with bulls and roosters sell...
It is funny that a famous painter should take such a light view of Art and it stunns one who are already confused to know what is art .
Perhaps it must be true that life is a tale told by an idiot signifying nothing !

अरुणोदय झाला-----९
पुस्तके आणि किंमती
जी पुस्तके अगदी हवी असतात त्यांना किंमत मोजताना काही वाटत नाही. पण आता काही एखाद्या परिक्षेसाठी वाचायचे नसते, त्यामुळे कोणत्याही पुस्तकाला कमीत कमी पैसे पडले तर बरे, असे हमखास वाटते. त्यामुळे मी बेस्ट सेलर्स "पायरेटेड एडिशन" मधली वाचतो. ह्यात छपाईची शाई कधी कधी पुसट दिसते तर कधी पाने मागे पुढे लागलेली असतात. पण शब्द अन शब्द तोच, लेखकाचाच असतो. शिवाय "पायरेटेड" पुस्तके छापणारे स्वत: खूप धोरणी असतात, जी पुस्तके प्रसिद्ध होऊ शकणारी असतात तीच पायरेट करतात.( मराठीत पायरेटेड झालेले मी पाहिलेले पहिले पुस्तक: आम्ही अन आमचा बाप-ले-नरेंद्र जाधव ). त्यामुळे हमखास चांगलीच निघतात.
हर्बर्ट रीड ह्यांचे "मीनींग ऑफ आर्ट" हे पुस्तक मी किती तरी वर्षे शोधत होतो. कुठेच मिळाले नाही. त्यामुळे इथे आल्या आल्या इथल्या लायब्ररीत तेच हुडकले आणि ते सापडलेही. आता नेहमीच्या प्रथेने विचार करीत होतो की आता हे झेरॉक्स करून घ्यावे. नातवाला हाताशी धरून घरच्या झेरॉक्स मशीनशी झटापट सुरू करणार तोच नातवाने आजोबांना सल्ला दिला की कशाला झंझट करता, अमेझॉन वर विकतच घ्या, स्वस्त पडेल. आता मला माझ्या नातवाला दाखवायचेच होते की भारतीय कंजूशीने झेरॉक्सच कसे स्वस्त पडते. पण काय आश्चर्य, अमेझॉन वर वापरलेले पुस्तक अवघे एका डॉलरला मिळाले. तिसर्‍या दिवशी पुस्तक ( नवे कोरेच म्हणाना असे ) हातात, शिवाय पाठणावळ माफ होती. मग ह्याच लेखकाची इतर दोन तीन पुस्तकेही अशीच दोन दोन डॉलरला मिळाली. दुर्मिळ पुस्तके व तीहि इतकी स्वस्तात, असा दुप्पट आनंद झाला. अर्थात अमेझॉनवरून भारतात मागवली असती तर नाकापेक्षा मोती जडच झाले असते !
खरे तर आता भारतात आल्यावर इ-बे इंडिया वर अशी दुर्मिळ पुस्तके स्वस्त मिळतात का हे बघायला हवे !
स्वस्त पेक्षाही फुकट बरी असे वाटून मग काही फार अतिप्राचीन पुस्तके गुटेनबर्ग ह्या संकेतस्थळावर जाऊन खाली उतरवून घेतली. त्यात एक ८०० पानी प्लेटोचे "रिपब्लिक" ही घेतले. अगदी चकट फू !

Books and prices
Though I love to buy good books, I don't want to spend much money on them. Especially since I do not read any books for any exam., I want to spend as little on them. I don't mind if these are used ones. Most of the Best Sellers I read in "Pirated Editions". Only drawback in those is , sometimes the ink is little faded and page numbers get jumbled up. But each word in these pirated books is original . An added advantage in reading such pirated editions is you can almost be confident that the book is good because the pirates will not spend their energies on any other book but a sure fire best seller !
Some books are hard to get. I was searching for one such book viz., "Meaning of Art" by Herbert Read. Hence the first thing I searched here was this book. And like last time, I got this rare book, this time too, in Library here. Now I wanted to get it xeroxed, to take it to India and at a nominal cost of xeroxing. With the help of my grandchildren I started tinkering with the xerox machine at home. But my grandson advised to look it up on amazon. Before I could tell him the economy of xeroxing, he said it might be cheaper as a book on amazon. And what a surprise ? I got it as cheap as at 1 Dollar and that too, delivered free. Taking inspiration from this, then I ordered few more rare books of the same author which I got for as little as 2 Dollars. The pleasure of receiving beautiful art at the cost of nothing, is a valuable experience I will cherish throught my visit in America.
While, I was wondering on amazon another website showed me a better deal . I always wanted to read the old classic "Republic" of Plato and I got it down from Gutenberg free of charge. This beats all the pleasures of good rare books and at no cost !

पुस्तके आणि किंमती
जी पुस्तके अगदी हवी असतात त्यांना किंमत मोजताना काही वाटत नाही. पण आता काही एखाद्या परिक्षेसाठी वाचायचे नसते, त्यामुळे कोणत्याही पुस्तकाला कमीत कमी पैसे पडले तर बरे, असे हमखास वाटते. त्यामुळे मी बेस्ट सेलर्स "पायरेटेड एडिशन" मधली वाचतो. ह्यात छपाईची शाई कधी कधी पुसट दिसते तर कधी पाने मागे पुढे लागलेली असतात. पण शब्द अन शब्द तोच, लेखकाचाच असतो. शिवाय "पायरेटेड" पुस्तके छापणारे स्वत: खूप धोरणी असतात, जी पुस्तके प्रसिद्ध होऊ शकणारी असतात तीच पायरेट करतात.( मराठीत पायरेटेड झालेले मी पाहिलेले पहिले पुस्तक: आम्ही अन आमचा बाप-ले-नरेंद्र जाधव ). त्यामुळे हमखास चांगलीच निघतात.
हर्बर्ट रीड ह्यांचे "मीनींग ऑफ आर्ट" हे पुस्तक मी किती तरी वर्षे शोधत होतो. कुठेच मिळाले नाही. त्यामुळे इथे आल्या आल्या इथल्या लायब्ररीत तेच हुडकले आणि ते सापडलेही. आता नेहमीच्या प्रथेने विचार करीत होतो की आता हे झेरॉक्स करून घ्यावे. नातवाला हाताशी धरून घरच्या झेरॉक्स मशीनशी झटापट सुरू करणार तोच नातवाने आजोबांना सल्ला दिला की कशाला झंझट करता, अमेझॉन वर विकतच घ्या, स्वस्त पडेल. आता मला माझ्या नातवाला दाखवायचेच होते की भारतीय कंजूशीने झेरॉक्सच कसे स्वस्त पडते. पण काय आश्चर्य, अमेझॉन वर वापरलेले पुस्तक अवघे एका डॉलरला मिळाले. तिसर्‍या दिवशी पुस्तक ( नवे कोरेच म्हणाना असे ) हातात, शिवाय पाठणावळ माफ होती. मग ह्याच लेखकाची इतर दोन तीन पुस्तकेही अशीच दोन दोन डॉलरला मिळाली. दुर्मिळ पुस्तके व तीहि इतकी स्वस्तात, असा दुप्पट आनंद झाला. अर्थात अमेझॉनवरून भारतात मागवली असती तर नाकापेक्षा मोती जडच झाले असते !

अरुणोदय झाला--८
साल्वोदोर डाली, किंमत झाली ?
मागे बातमी होती की साल्वोदोर डाली ह्या चित्रकाराचे चित्र काही कोटी डॉलर्सना ऑक्शनमध्ये विकल्या गेले. प्रथम त्याचा अचंबा वाटला, एवढी किंमत कशी ? मग वाचले की अशा प्रचंड किंमती इतर चित्रांनाही कशा मिळतात, हुसेन ह्यांची चित्रेही कशी कोटी कोटीला विकल्या जातात. मग वाटले की होता तरी कोण हा डाली ?
तर कळले की हा स्पेनचा मूळचा, सर-रिअ‍ॅलिस्ट चित्रप्रणालीचा एक चित्रकार, १९८३ मध्ये वारलेला. ह्याने स्वत:च्या चित्रांच्या प्रदर्शन, खरेदी, विक्री वगैरे साठी एक विना-प्रॉफिट फौंडेशन केलेले आहे. त्यांच्याकडे आजमितीला ५०० मिलियन डॉलरची चित्रे संग्रही आहेत व गेली २० वर्षे ते त्याची चित्रे खाजगी लोकांकडून विकत घेत आहेत. ह्याने चित्रांबरोबर फोटोग्राफी, कमर्शियल डिझाइनिंग, मूर्तीकला असे नाना उपद्व्याप केलेले. ह्याला विज्ञानाचे भयंकर आकर्षण. ह्याची प्रसिद्ध चित्रे आइनस्टाइनच्या रिलेटिव्हिटी ऑफ टाइम वर आधारलेली आहेत तर कित्येक न्युक्लियर तंत्रज्ञानावर. ह्याला आर्ट स्कूलने काढून टाकले होते कारण तो कोणाला योग्यतेचा समजत नव्हता. सर-रिएलिस्टांच्या संघटनेनेही नंतर ह्याच्यावर बहिष्कार टाकला होता. स्वत:च्या बापाबरोबर भांडण झाल्यावर ह्याला बेघर व्हावे लागले होते. वडिलांनी त्याचे नाव त्याच्या आधी मेलेल्या भावाचेच ठेवले होते तर त्याला आपण भावाचाच अवतार आहोत असे कैक वर्षे वाटे. ज्या येशू,मेरीचे चित्र ह्याने काढले होते त्यावर मी थुंकतो अस तो एकदा म्हणाला होता, तर शेवटच्या दिवसात अतिशय धार्मिक झाला होता. तो अतिशय छानछोकीने राही, विक्षिप्त वागे, सिनेमे पाही, काढी, दिग्दर्शन करी असा हरहुन्नरी व नंतर ठार वेडा म्हणता येईल असा !
त्याच्याच सारखे वेडे असणारे असंख्य वेडे चित्रकार आजही त्याच्या सारखी किंमत मिळावी असे वेड मनी बाळगून असतील पण चित्रात जे सर्जनाचे बेभान वेड हवे ते अजूनही त्यांच्या वाट्याला येत नाही, चित्रांची किंमत तर नाहीच ! डालीच्या वाटेला आलेले सर्जनाचे वेड लोभाचे का त्याच्या चित्रांच्या वाटेला आलेली किंमत लोभाची हे मात्र ठरवणे अशक्य !

Salvodor Dali, Got good price ?
Last week's news brought Salvador Dali in limelight once again. His personae was always seeking it, the history tells us. When we read about his life our amazement about the price his pictures is fetching fades away and we are left wonderstruck at the icredible turn of events he had. And yet he could produce such masterpieces.
At one time he was one of the main promotors of surrealist tradition but later they expelled him from their camp. He was even ousted from the Art school as he never accepted anyone to judge his paintings. He was a great student of science and many of his paintings show Einstein's relativity of time and some nuclear science. Though he initially insulted his own picture about Mary and Jesus, he turned to religion in his later life. He was given to dress dandy and practiced many other arts like photography, sculpture, commercial arts, advertising, acting in cinemas, directing them etc. Non-profit foundation in his name has a rich collection of his paintings worth 500 million and they are still buying since last 20 yrs.
There are many an artists who are equally ecentric in behaviour but would love to aspire to get the price for their paintings as his paintings command.
We are perplexed to decide as to what we should value more, his ecentricity in life or his madness in his artistic creations or the amazing price which his paintings fetch these days ?
