भाषा तसे विचार
अमेरिकेत काहीही घडू शकते. "वॉल स्ट्रीट जर्नल" तसे शेअर्स, उद्योग वगैरे वरचे दैनिक. पण परवा त्यात स्टॅनफोर्ड युनिव्हर्सिटीच्या कल्चरल सायकॉलॉजीच्या मुख्य, श्रीमती लेरा बोरोडिटिस्की ह्यांचा "भाषेचे विचारांवर होणारे परिणाम" असा एक छान मोठा लेख होता. लेखिकेने त्यात असे दाखविले आहे की आपण कोणती भाषा बोलतो, त्याप्रमाणे आपल्या विचारांवर परिणाम होतो. भाषेचे रचनेचे जे निय़म असतात त्यानुसार विचार येतात. उदाहरण म्हणून बाई सांगतात की स्पॅनिश भाषेत "जॉन ने भांडे फोडले" असे म्हणताना "भांडे आपोआप फुटले" असे म्हणावे लागतात. त्यांच्या म्हणण्यानुसार मग जॉन जर स्पॅनिश मध्ये बोलला तर त्याच्यावरचा आळ जातो व भांडे फुटते. सामान्य वाचकाला ही "भांडा फोड" फोड केल्यावरच उमगणार.
इथे आठवण येते ती पु.ल.देशपांडेंची. ते म्हणत प्रत्येक भाषेचा आपला एक लहेजा असतो. उर्दू भाषा इतकी भारदस्त, शेर-शायरीवाली की त्यांना वाटे वाघ कधी काळी बोलला तर उर्दूतच बोलेल. असेच कित्येकांना वाटते की रसग्गुल्ला खाल्ल्यावर बोलण्याची गोड प्रेमाची भाषा म्हणजे बांग्ला. आपल्याकडे कोणाला "वाकडे" बोलायचे असेल तर ते मराठीतच चांगले येणार.
कदाचित म्हणूनच आपल्याकडे "चलता है" असे म्हटल्याने आपल्याला काही चांगले मिळत नाही तर अमेरिकनांना सगळे "बेस्ट" मिळते.
सहज म्हणून ह्या बाईंचे संकेतस्थळ पाहिले तर अजून एक गंमतशीर बाब पहायला मिळाली. त्यांनी डिपार्टमेंटची एक अ‍ॅंथेम केली आहे. हे गाणे म्हणते, "तुम्ही काहीही म्हणा मी त्याविरुद्ध आहे". विरोधाचे बाळकडू पाजणारी ही विदुषी एकदम मराठीच वाटते,इतके न पटण्याचे व मराठीचे सख्य आहे. हे पटवण्यासाठी चला ह्यांना विरोध करू. प्रसिद्ध भाषाविदुषी सुसन लॅंगर म्हणतात की विचार "चिन्हा"त असतात, भाषेत नसतात. समजा मराठी ही भाषा लैंगिक बोलण्याला असभ्य समजणारी आहे, म्हणून मला "लैंगिक" विचार येत नसतील तर आता अमेरिकेत चालते म्हणून इंग्रजीत बोललो तर मला "लैंगिक" विचार येतील हे कसे शक्य आहे? आजकाल प्रत्येकाला मराठी, हिंदी, इंग्रजी ह्या भाषा सहजी येतात व प्रसंगापरत्वे, स्थळपरत्वे बोलाव्या लागतातही. तर मग माणसाचे विचार असे सारखे बदलते कसे होतील ? माझा मराठी बाणा आता कसा छान विरोधतो आहे !

Lost in Translation
Strange things happen in America. The other day "Wall Street Journal" had an article on "effect of language on thoughts" by Ms.Lera Boroditsky who is heading cultural psychology department at Stanford University. She proposes that the way we think is affected by the language one speaks.Demonstrating the difference she cites examples of Spanish, in which they say "the vase broke itself" instead of "John broke the vase". Since the blame goes away in Spanish, Johns would love it, but the common man would not understand this linguistic gimmick.

P.L.Deshpande used to say that Urdu is such a grandiosque language that if ever a lion talks, it will be in Urdu. Bengalees speak so sweet that we feel the language of love has to be as sweet as Russagulla. If ever one has to speak insultingly, perhaps one would speak aptly in Marathi. Perhaps in all Indian languages we say "chaltaa hai " and that may be the reason we don't insist so much for what we want and Americans get all the best !

When one surfs the website of this professor, we find a funny "anthem" she has posted there. It goes " Whatever you say,I am agaist it". She seems to inculcate the Socrates' habit of going against the well trodden path for exploring new possibilities. Let us take her on the anthem and go against her proposition here. I remember the great linguist Ms.Susan Langer telling us that our "thoughts" do occur to us through "symbols" and we interpret or communicate by language. If that happens, when I am having a sexual urge , say, then it must be appearing in my mind in some "sexy symbols". Now if my mother tongue, say, Marathi, gives me inhibitions and taboo for such "thoughts" ( and at this age ) then my language must be supressing or prohibiting it and if I speak, say, English, it must encourage it. But I know from experience that no such phenomenon takes place,for any language I speak. And thoughts come and go irrespective of the language I speak. Especially in India, where everyone easily speaks at least three languages ( Marathi, English, Hindi ) , it would be a great confusion of changing "symbols" for three languages and may be we keep mum ! See, I am already influenced by the Lera's anthem and going against her !
