नव्या शब्दांचे घडणे

भाषा शास्त्र म्हणते की आपण प्रत्यही नवनवीन शब्द बनवत असतो, ते अंमलात आणत असतो, व कालांतराने त्यातली गोडी संपत आली की ते चक्क टाकूनही देतो. आपण पाहिले की आजकाल नवीन टारगट पोरे "वाट लागली", "भंकस", "फंडा", "सेंटी होणे", वगैरे शब्द बिनधास्त वापरत असतात.

तर अशाच अमेरिकेत वाट लागलेल्या एका कंपनीने ( गोल्डमन सॅक्स ) तोंडी अशा सूचना दिल्या आहेत की त्यांच्या नोकरवर्गाने सर्व शब्द ई-मेल मध्ये जपून वापरावेत व ते एरव्ही वापरतात ते शब्द, पण जे आजकाल बदनाम झालेत, ते वापरू नयेत. वाट लागल्यावर अमेरिका अभिव्यक्ति-स्वातंत्र्यावर कसे सोईस्करपणे डोळ्यावर कातडे ओढून घेते हे आपण बघतोच आहोत. अमेरिकेचा सेनापती अध्यक्षांविरुद्ध जरा मानहानीकारक बोलला ( एका मासिकाच्या मुलाखतीत )तर त्याला काढून टाकले गेले आणि तरीही दुसरीकडे जॉन स्टुअर्ट त्याच्या रोजच्या "डेली शो" कार्यक्रमात भल्याभल्यांची खिल्ली उडवत असतो. अशा गोंधळात हे कोणते शब्द आहेत हे पाहणे गमतीचे ठरेल.

एक शब्द आहे "एस-डील" ! काय असते हे ? तर सांगतात की "स्वीट-हार्ट डील". आता ह्या शब्दात नैतिकतेच्या चष्म्यातून बाधा येणारे काही दिसत नाही, मग हा का वापरू नये ? तर वकील लोक सांगतात, हे असे करार असतात की ज्यात सर्व फायदा एकाच पक्षाला , स्वीट-हार्टला, होतो. म्हणजे थोडक्यात जे एकतर्फी करार असतात ते कायद्याच्या दृष्टीने बेकायदा असतात. वेस्ट इंडीजला असताना आम्ही आमच्या कॉंन्ट्रॅक्टस मध्ये भारतीय परंपरेने मुदतीत काम न झाल्यास किती दंड ( पेनल्टी ) ते लिहीत असू. तिथल्या कंपन्या अमेरिकन प्रभावाखालच्य़ा . त्या म्हणत उशीर झाला तर जसा दंड तसाच लवकर काम उरकल्याबद्दल बक्षीसीही असायला हवी. हे कॉंन्ट्रॅक्ट कोर्टात टिकणार नाहीत व ते स्वीट-हार्ट कॉन्ट्रॅक्ट्स ठरविल्या जातील.

जगात सर्वात भरभराट व्हावी ती मात्र अमेरिकेची, पण करार असू नयेत स्वीट हार्ट डील सारखे, असा अमेरिकन नीती- मत्तेचा खाक्या. इथे मुक्त अभिव्यक्ती स्वातंत्र्य असूनही हा नवीन शब्द वापरू नका असे म्हणताहेत, ते मात्र भाषाशास्त्राच्या विरुद्ध आहे !

New Words

Linguistics tells us that over a period,in any language, we coin new words or give a new meaning to the existing words and when these are rarely used we throw them away as obosolete.

Recently Goldman Sachs in USA has asked its employees to use some words very cautiously in their emails, letters etc. This is mostly due to image problems. It is interesting to see which words the company thinks as damaging. Some words or symbolic short forms of them like "WTF" are definitely morally low sounding ( assuming the long form could be "Want to f---" ). Another word being banned is "S-deal". This word, though morally passable, perhaps means "Sweetheart Deal". What is so damning about Sweetheart Deal ? The lawyers will tell us that these are deals, which give all the terms favourable to one party alone, just like how we treat our sweethearts. Or at least we are supposed to.

When I was in West Indies, we used to mention in our contracts, in the habit of Indian ways of deals, a clause specifying penalty for delays. The contractors used to tell me that mentioning penalty alone, and not providing for incentives for early completion, would render these contracts to be Sweetheart deals and so void in court of law. So, the sweetheart deals are not balanced and are onesided and thus not considered as flawless contract.

On one hand America prides itself for upholding the right to freedom of speech ( but fires its general for speaking to a magazine in not so kind words about the president ) and on the other even the company going downhill like Goldman Sachs, tells which words not to use. Moreover the pure science of linguistics tells us that people will coin new words and new meanings ! It is a strange world !
